After the fall of the peso: aid and recovery in Mexico

Article Abstract:

Capital markets around the world were badly shaken by the Mexican peso crisis which occurred in Mexico in Dec 1994 causing a preceding decade of stagnant economies in Mexico and other Latin American countries. Various factors, such as the tragic 1994 political rebellions and assassinations that took place in Mexico, were identified as factors which caused the peso's 1994 downfall. Mexico's peso crisis has highlighted several lessons such as the fact that countries with low saving rates are vulnerable to financial crisis, and fixed exchange rates plunge emerging markets into high risks.
