America's challenge
Article Abstract:
Japan is increasing its investment in basic research and will soon exceed the US in funding of civilian research and development. The US should respond to this challenge by recognizing the economic importance of science and technology. A two-way flow of technology with Japan is vital.

Psychiatric drug development in Japan
Article Abstract:
Japan is 10 years behind the West in the approval and use of psychiatric drugs. Causes of the lag include the high costs of repeating clinical drug trials already completed in other countries and flaws in drug trial methodology.
