Analysis of the failure of ceramics due to Subcritical Crack Growth

Article Abstract:

An expression for the failure probability of a ceramic structure has been derived within the framework of the weakest link theory and the independent events assumption by accounting for Subcritical Crack Growth. The expression helps identify the parameters of the flaw size distribution by considering the highest and the lowest stress rates to which a spinel Mn Zn ferrite is subjected. Failure conditions have been assessed by analyzing flaw distributions and crack growth laws in the Mn Zn ferrite subjected or not to Subcritical Crack Growth.

Modeling complex behavior of metals by the

Article Abstract:

The complex behavior of metals are modeled using the state-kinetic coupling theory. The theory is capable of introducing important state variables that cannot be measured through conventional approach. These variables include the material's strain, thermal, hardening and microstructural properties. Differential calculus is used to evaluate the coupling relationship between the said variables. The state-kinetic coupling theory can be useful in te analysis of a material's plastic, viscoplastic and damage characteristics.

Long-term reliability of brittle materials: the issue of crack arrest

Article Abstract:

A probabilistic crack propagation model is derived to describe instantaneous or delayed arrest phenomena and a time regime is induced by slow crack growth experienced by ceramics and glasses. The results are illustrated on a case study dealing with propagation of cracks in a thin walled tube submitted to a temperature gradient through its thickness.
