Arm's reach

Article Abstract:

European manufacturing firms are utilizing robots with the aim of reducing labor costs, improving the production process and enhancing product quality. Manufacturers are hoping that programmable automation will enable them to manufacture a diverse range of products and to accommodate new ones into the production process without costly delays and investments. The latest investments in programmable automation include a modular assembly line, a two-armed robot for the assembly of switches and programmable conveyor.

Arms and legs

Article Abstract:

Industrial robots are becoming more commonplace especially in automotive manufacturing companies. In 1996, General Motors bought 1,500 robots from Japanese robot supplier Fanuc while in 1997, Kuka received an order for 1,500 robots to be used by Volkswagen. While robots have been usually applied for spot welding, they are gaining prominence in other applications such as the manufacture of car seats. Robots are becoming more diverse because of decreasing prices, improved reliability and ease of use.

Logical developments

Article Abstract:

Advances in communication and control systems are helping manufacturing companies enhance their productivity and reduce operating costs. Honeywell has overcome problems due to the use of programmable logic controllers by employing a Smart Distributed System PC-based control system. The system employs a control area network to connect sensor equipment on the production line directly to the supervisory computer.
