Atmospheric behavior of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans and the effect of combustion temperature

Article Abstract:

The gas and particle partitioning of the combustion products of wood chips treated with pentachlorophenol (PCP), polyvinyl chloride plastic pipe shavings and solid PCP was studied. Emissions were injected into Teflon film chambers and exposed to sunlight. Tetra- and pentachlorinated dioxins and furans partitioned into the gas phase whereas polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and dibenzofurans (PCDF) showed little reactivity. However, low-temperature combustion increases the reactivity of both PCDD and PCDF, suggesting the occurrence of photolysis.

Chamber aging studies on the atmospheric stability of polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans

Article Abstract:

The atmospheric stability of polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PBDDs) and polybrominated dibenzofurans (PBDFs) was studied. The combustion of polyurethane foam consisting of polybrominated diphenyl ethers resulted in dilute emissions, and these emissions were aged in outdoor chambers in the presence of sunlight. The results revealed that PBDDs and PBDFs are stable or degrade slowly over several hours.

Multivariate characterization and modeling of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans

Article Abstract:

A multivariate physicochemical characterization of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) was conducted. Some 136 PCDDs and PCDFs congeners with four to eight chlorine atoms were analyzed, and multivariate quantitative structure-activity relationships were developed. Size-related chemical variables and substitution patterns were identified.
