Bad vibrations

Article Abstract:

Engineers deputed by the insurance companies to investigate claims of vibration-triggered damages often misjudge air and ground vibrations caused by construction equipment or blasting, rendering their opinions erroneous. Such investigative errors often result in payment against unjustified claims, and endless litigation between the insurer and the insured. Conferences and courses in seismic sciences can help the investigators gain experience in weighing evidence and reaching unbiased and unambiguous conclusions.

New technological development in wireless communication area has opened channels to convey data from the fiber-optic vibration sensors, deployed at the construction sites, to a central computer facility over cordless telephone system. The system is a better alternative to the conventional cabled load cells currently used to measure formwork loads.
