Blue laser race turns red-hot

Article Abstract:

Researchers at Nichia Chemical Industries report development of the first electrically powered laser from a gallium nitride (GaN) alloy. The GaN laser is more durable than the rival zinc-selenide (ZnSe) technology and has the advantage of already being used in light-emitting diodes.

Mixing nanotube structures to make a tiny switch

Article Abstract:

Two research teams have developed models of nanotube switches. A hollow cylinder of carbon atoms acts like a semiconductor at one end, while the other end behaves like a metal. A heterojunction - a gatelike junction that controls electron flow - separates the ends.
