Building the olivenhain

Article Abstract:

This article describes the construction of the Olivenhain reservoir in San Diego, California to hold 24,000 acre-feet of water. This structure with a dimension of 1,44 million cubic yard is constructed using exclusively roller-compacted concrete. Weak, weathered rock forms are used in the foundation. Earth quake safety is addressed by levelling the foundation with roller-compacted concrete.

Making the transition

Article Abstract:

The diversion structure of the Thornton Transitional Reservoir, south of Chicago, directs flood-water into a drop shaft and ultimately to the reservoir. The quarry's deep west lobe holds 3.1 billion galons of water. Project analysis indicates that the structure improves water quality besides providing flood control.

Study determines that restoring Hetch Hetchy Valley would be costly

Article Abstract:

A debate on the restoration of the Hetch Hetchy Valley in San Francisco, California, either by means of modifying or removal of O'Shaughnessy Dam, is presented. Such a step is an expensive affair and is opposed by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.
