CERN sets sights on an early LHC

Article Abstract:

CERN voted to advance the completion date of the Large Hadron Collider by three years, to 2005, while cutting the budget of some other projects. It is hoped that the unprecedented power of the $2-billion LHC will help prove the existence of the Higgs boson and other theoretically predicted particles.

Broken belt sets back new accelerator

Article Abstract:

The Center for Nuclear Research (CRN) has halted operation of its Van de Graaff electrostatic accelerator in Mar 1995 due to problems with its rubber belt. Replacements belts for the Vivitron disintegrated because they had been made with polyurethane rather than nitrile rubber.

Politics meets technology in Next Collider

Five designs for the Next Linear Collider were proposed at the 1996 International Linac Conference. Both technological and political issues are involved in choosing a site for the multibillion-dollar international project.
