Mammal melee: new fossils impugn leading model of early mammal origins

Article Abstract:

Reports given at the 1999 Society of Vertebrate Paleontology dispute some of the previous assumptions about the history of mammals. For example, a jaw fragment found in Madagascar adds some 25 million years to the estimated age of tribosphenic mammals.

Cetacean creation: new fossils leave researchers wondering where whales come from

Article Abstract:

Paleontologists and molecular biologists are debating who the terrestial ancestors of whales were. Paleontologists believe whales are descended from wolflike creatures known as mesonychians while molecular biologists think that whales are closely related to hippos.
