Children's health to be new focus for EPA, research, says Browner

Article Abstract:

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Carol Browner has formed the Office of Children's Health and Protection and plans to create the new Office of Reinvention and Center for Environmental Information and Statistics. The move is intended to align the agency's research and policy directions towards children's health protection. EPA's estimated funding for the centers will be $6.4 million in redirected funds and another $1 million in new funds. The agency has asked for an additional $15.4 million in its 1998 budget for the funding of the centers.

Risk commission issues guide for managers, calls for new approach

Article Abstract:

The Presidential/Congressional Commission on Risk Assessment and Risk Management, created by the Clean Air Act 1990 Amendments, has issued guidelines on risk management in its 64-page final report. In the two-volume report, the 10-member science panel introduces an approach for making risk management decisions and offers real-life cases of good and bad risk-based decisions. It also suggests that a more comprehensive risk management methodology be used when gathering information for environmental and public health rulemaking and decision-making.
