Clinton's mixed broth for R&D

Article Abstract:

Pres Bill Clinton's science budget proposes to sustain overall support to science and technology including a cost-of living increase. However within this parameter, some programs will suffer cuts, such as the 10% cut in aid to the military's basic research projects.

Healy stays, fetal tissue ban goes

Article Abstract:

Pres Clinton retained Bernadine Healy as director of NIH as well as all other science officials appointed by the previous administration. Clinton lifted the ban on federally funded fetal tissue research, and the planned fetal tissue bank may be unnecessary.

A new kind of earmarking

Article Abstract:

Pres Clinton's administration has earmarked some $650 million of the 1994 NIH budget for research on specific diseases and groups. NIH officials are unhappy at the loss of flexibility in funding research.
