Closure and growth of fatigue cracks at notches

Article Abstract:

The development of fatigue cracks in notches of components is studied through a finite element model. The crack is allowed to increase by releasing the crack tip node up to 50 loading cycles and stresses were checked for opening or closing of the crack faces. Results show that the crack opening stresses increase significantly as the crack moves away from the notch. The changes in the initial crack stresses are not confined to the inelastic field but take place also at the elastic field. The rate of change of the initial stresses with the crack length is dependent on the maximum stress and stress ratio.

Mean strain effect on crack initiation lives for notched specimens under biaxial nonproportional loading paths

Article Abstract:

The mean strain effect on the crack initiation lives for notched specimens under biaxial nonproportional loading paths is analyzed. Elastic-plastic finite element method was employed to evaluate the local stresses and strains. Various prediction models related to the mean stress/strain effect were used to correlate the experimental results with reference fatigue data for smooth specimens. Findings indicated that the Fatemi-Socie model provides good prediction with the assistance of the finite element method.

Optimization of thermomechanical loading by inverse method

Article Abstract:

The two dimensional experimental results and the numerical simulations of thermal loads are presented in order to observe their influences on the life of mechanical systems. This experimental and thermal evolution is measured using several thermocouples and an infrared pyrometer.
