Coming to America: Immigration today rivals the influx of a century ago

Article Abstract:

The new wave of immigration that rivals the massive influx of 1880-1914 started with the Immigration and Nationality Act of the year 1965. About 27 million legal immigrants have crossed the border, in addition, to an estimated 10.3 million illegal ones living in the U.S. and the result is that by the year 2004 there were 34.2 million foreign-born residents in the country.

Article Abstract:

Studies by the International Labor Organization indicates that about 12.3 million people are subjected to some kind of forced labor classified as economic, state-imposed and sexual. These kind of exploitations occurs mostly in developed countries and effects lower castes of India, Pakistan and indigenous people of Nepal and Brazil.

The first comprehensive law to reform political fund-raaising was passed in 1974, but court decisions and loopholes have curbed its effectivness. Soft- and hard-money spending on campaigns and efforts to eliminate soft money are discussed.
