Photovoltaic cells, commonly used in devices such as calculators, are being increasingly used to provide electricity in locations beyond the reach of power transmission lines. The high cost of the cells has aroused interest in a new method of manufacturing based on dye-coated titanium dioxide.

Plastic power: lightweight batteries show their muscle in demonstrations

Article Abstract:

All-plastic batteries promise to enhance the performance of equipment with their light weight and flexibility. Developed by Johns Hopkins University Researchers, the rechargeable batteries can generate up to three volts. However, they require special electronics and hermetic sealing.

Getting real? Synthetic emotions could make computers nicer

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University are working on computer prototypes which will sense a user's mood, enabling the computer to respond to such moods and become a more effective work assistant.
