DOE lab predicts future envirotech breakthroughs

Article Abstract:

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNLL) division of the Department of Energy has issued a list of ten major technological breakthroughs which the agency is looking forward to accomplish in a ten-year span. The move is primarily aimed at increasing public awareness on the government's substantial environmental programs. Some of the major highlights of the list is the development of environmental sensors with real-time capabilities, use of environment-friendly automobiles and containers and the deployment of smart water treatment systems.

Drinking water proposal eases some health goals

Article Abstract:

The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) proposal to lower its standards for chloroform in drinking water has been questioned by environmental groups. The environmentalists have doubts on the method used by the EPA to determine an acceptable limit of 300 micrograms per liter for chloroform, a probable carcinogen that also affects the liver. The EPA, which has previously set a "zero tolerance" goal for chloroform, a by-product of chlorination, has also increased the limit for two other chemicals, chlorine dioxide and chlorite.
