Dechlorination of the chloroacetanilide herbicides alachlor and metolachlor by iron metal

Article Abstract:

The dechlorination of the chloroacetanilide herbicides alachlor and metolachlor by iron metal produced chloride (84% mass balance for alachlor and 68% for metolachlor) and dechlorinated acetanilides. Alachlor and metolachlor are both important chloroacetanilide herbicides utilized for broadleaf weeds and annual grasses in domestic soybean and corn crops. Backed by GC/EIMS, two sequential reactions may have happened for alachlor, hydrogenolysis of the chloroacetyl group, followed by an N-dealkylation reaction.

The challenge of predicting nonpoint source pollution

Article Abstract:

A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a valuable tool for organizing, storing, manipulating, retrieving and displaying spatially related information regarding the prediction of nonpoint source pollution (NPS). GIS, which was developed a decade ago primarily to aid in the assessment of the environmental impact of NPS pollutants, can be used to model NPS pollutants. The modeling approach, however, pose some uncertainties and yield some modeling and data-driven limitations.
