Deciphering the otoliths

Article Abstract:

Otoliths are stones located in the inner ears of fishes which record the daily activities of a fish from its embryo stage to maturity. Indicators such as width of growth rings, chemical composition and markings on the stones disclose information that may be vital to fishery management.

Toxic cannibals: eating your own kind can be hazardous to your health

Article Abstract:

There are advantages and disadvantages to the practice of cannibalism by animals and insects. Cannibalism allows them to have ready mealsand to grow at a more rapid pace. However, it may also imperil their lives if their victims are infected with deadly toxins or bacteria.

Pollinators in peril: insects have been keeping plants' evolutionary juices flowing for centuries

Article Abstract:

Insects that pollinate plants and insure the longevity of the flora species are in danger of being exterminated. Their habitats are being destroyed by land development activities, use of pesticides by farmers and cropselection decisions of growers.
