Deformation characteristics of Piedmont residual soils

Article Abstract:

Comments on a study on deformation behavior of Piedmont residual soils in North Carolina are presented. The site and laboratory experiments conducted on the soils have addressed the issues that concern building foundation design in Piedmont geology. However, data obtained from near-surface Piedmont residual red clay show that this particular material differs in deformation characteristics from residual soil. Moreover, additional references are suggested for site evaluation of Piedmont soils.

Field observations on stabilization of unpaved roads with geosynthetics

Article Abstract:

There are two issues of concern in the study by R.J. Fannin and O. Sigurdsson regarding the development of ruts on unpaved roads. The study involved only a few number of truck passes on the roads. This allows the positive pore water pressures to dissipate and the clayey subgrade soil to recover its strength. Another concern is that problems which can arise when the clay subgrade is in a dense compacted state have not been considered.

SRICOS: Prediction of scour rate in cohesive soils at bridge piers

Article Abstract:

The authors discuss previous work on the scouring of cohesive soils at bridge piers, in which dispersive clay is considered as an adhesive considered to be resistant to erosion. However, the authors believe that it causes failure of earth dams and creates a unique kind of erosion in the form of vertical tunnels called 'jugs.'
