Development of Novel Bifunctional Anion-Exchange Resins with Improved Selectivity for Pertechnetate Sorption from Contaminated Groundwater

Article Abstract:

Technetium-99 has been discharged into the environment for several decades. A new class of anion-exchange resins called "bifunctional" are the subject of this study concerning the sorption kinetics and selectivity of the resin in removing pertechnetate[TcO4-] from groundwater. Field results show that the bifunctional resin worked five times better than commercial anion-exchange resins. In addition, the bifunctional resins can remove perchlorate[ClO4-] because of the similarity in structure to TcO4-. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory has developed a process for regenerating the resins for repeated use.

A Log-Normal Distribution Model for the Molecular Weight of Aquatic Fulvic Acids

Article Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to create a conceptual and methodological framework to understand the role of Humic substances[HS] in environmental processes. HS are a naturally occurring mix of compounds that play a crucial role in pollutant chemistry. The molecular weight of an HS determines its binding properties, pollutant partitioning, adsorption onto minerals, and behavior during water treatment. A log-normal distribution model of aquatic fulvic acid is created and compared to HP-SEC measurements. Despite caveats the model is useful, further comparisons will be done between the model and whole water and soil, and more conceptualization will be needed to assimilate metal and organic speciation data.
