Net trophic transfer efficiency of PCBs to Lake Michigan coho salmon from their prey

Article Abstract:

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) body accumulation rates of Lake Michigan coho salmon have been found to be robust, with the fish retaining an estimated 50% of the PCB in their food. Sampling techniques determined PCB values in both coho salmon and their prey by using bioenergetics modelling. The estimates are the most reliable because sampling was done in spring, summer and fall at various locations and because sampling was done over a wide range of fish sizes, prey sizes and locations.

Thermal blanket for in-situ remediation of surficial contamination: a pilot test

Article Abstract:

Thermal desorption successfully and safely removed surficial polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) contamination from soils. In a field demonstration of a high-temperature, surface thermal blanket, decontamination was achieved and PCB concentrations were minimized from up to 2000 ppm to less than 2 ppm in 24 hours of heating. Results affirmed that the thermal blanket is a cost-effective in situ tool for soil remediation with surficial contamination of organic materials.
