EPA budget gets small boost for 1997

Article Abstract:

The EPA's 1997 appropriation was increased by 4% to $6.799 billion. The amount is $276 million more than its budget for 1996, but is $228 million lower than what Pres. Clinton requested. Science and technology received an appropriation of $552 million, which is $28 million more than the 1996 level but $26 million less than the administration's request. Superfund research funding got an increase of $10 million to reach $30 million, while the Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation program will receive $6.8 million as requested. Reductions were made in the extramural grant program and the graduate fellowships program, among others.

Report probes MACT, acid rain budget cuts

Article Abstract:

A recent report issued by the General Accounting Office shows that budget cuts and administration reprogramming of the FY 1994 budget had a severe impact on EPA emissions standards and acid rain control programs. In particular, budgetary problems were instrumental in the failure to develop maximum achievable control technology standards. Funding was also cut from the agency's Climate Change Action Plan program but the impact was not as great since some $30.4 million was shifted from other programs to maintain it.

New EPA budget boosts particulate matter research, Superfund cleanups

Article Abstract:

The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) new budget for 1998, amounting to $7.36 bil, provides more funding to particulate matter (PM) research and the Superfund account. The new budget, which is slightly below the $7.36 bil Pres. Clinton had requested, allocates about $50 mil for PM research and $2.1 bil for the Superfund account. The National Academy of Sciences was tasked to develop a long-term PM research for the agency.
