Ecological research at EPA: new directions

Article Abstract:

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) supports an environmental research program that is managed by the Office of Research and Development (ORD). The ORD has concentrated on research in such areas as cross-media pollutants, pollution sources and ozone depletion in the stratosphere. The EPA is making changes in its ecological research strategy so that it can address such environmental policy issues as the extent of ecological resources, the amount of exposure to pollution that the resources receive and the effectiveness of regulatory programs.

New health research on particulates sheds light on possible mechanism

Article Abstract:

Initial results from new research on particulate matter reveal possible biological mechanisms by which humans are affected by exposure to particulate matter (PM). Researchers from the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) National Health Effects and Environmental Research Laboratory have found links to PM exposure and effects on heart rates in humans and canines. Inconclusive findings about the mechanism of action were the main reasons for the debate over the EPA's final standard for particulate matter 2.5 microns or less in diameter.

Environmental auditing: a profession comes of age

Article Abstract:

Environmental auditing involves the inspection, documentation and evaluation of an organization's compliance with government regulations. The profession originated in the 1970s, spurred by a rash of environmental legislation. Since then, environmental auditing has evolved to the point where auditors have their own association, the influential Environmental Auditing Roundtable. The profession will proliferate as more and more organizations incorporate environmental auditing into total quality management programs.
