Educating engineers for the future: two views

Article Abstract:

Two views on the types of education to benefit the civil engineering industry are presented. The integration of basic engineering subjects in high school will enable students to view engineering as a career option while giving them an understanding of engineering concepts and a chance to develop engineering skills. Meanwhile, professional civil engineers can enhance their career by studying the effects of cultural beliefs and learning different languages. They also have to have a firm grasp of US civil engineering conditions and the impact of the profession on a global scale.

A suggestion to university administrators

Article Abstract:

University administrators can contribute to the solution of three problems currently facing the field of civil engineering. These are the rise of highly specialized researchers without general engineering skills, the reduction of research funding, and the lack of cooperation among practicing engineers. Colleges and technical universities are encouraged to make the transition from research to practice because this would enhance the quality of undergraduate education, sharpen focus of research initiatives and foster professional participation in academic activities.

A better image will attract better students

Article Abstract:

The low public opinion on civil engineering has reduced the number of students entering the program. Talented and better students opt for what they think are more intellectually challenging fields such as medicine or architecture. Less attractive salary packages have also contributed to civil engineering firms' difficulties in recruitment. In comparison with other professions, civil engineering has less effective public relations campaigns. Thus, it is imperative for civil engineers to improve public relations by demonstrating the contributions to society.
