Effects of Medical Research on Health Care and the Economy

Article Abstract:

Seven factors can affect the economic state of the health care industry in the US: the 1.5% annual decline in chronic disability among the aged, new understandings in medicine at the molecular level omitting the need for invasive surgery, increased longevity accounting for reduced health care costs, improved and faster means of drug research and development, better health education of the public, enhanced productivity in labor from a healthier population, and the rising influence of biotechnology on the economy.

The new genomics: global views of biology

Article Abstract:

The Human Genome Project is best likened to the discovery and consolidation of the periodic table from 1969 to 1889. The Human Genome Project will identify 100,000 genes, each with their own unique 'signatures.' Ten goals are proposed to guide the next phase of genomic research.

A magnetic attraction to high-throughput genomics

Article Abstract:

The design of an automated sequencing system to meet the throughput requirements of the Human Genome Project is presented. The Sequatron is an adaptable system that features a robotic arm and scheduling software controlled by a central computer.
