Ending welfare, leaving the poor to face new risk

Article Abstract:

Pres Clinton's signing of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act during one of his 1996 presidential campaigns annulled the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) federal program. The president's action, which he carried out based on a 1992 campaign promise, restricted states from awarding benefits to certain categories of dependent children. In place of AFDC, Clinton presented the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families block grant which has only toughened federal restrictions on benefit eligibility and has abolished the entitlement to cash assistance.

Benefits, opportunities decline for current welfare recipients

Article Abstract:

America's welfare programs have manifested a tragic decline in the level of cash benefits they offer since the 1970s due to slow economic growth and amplified economic distress for the working poor, the middle class and the unemployed. It is observed that economic hardships tend to affect inner-city inhabitants, single-mother families and secluded factory workers who lack working skills, education and a positive working attitude. Furthermore, the rapid growth of the technological industry has increased the demand for skilled workers, to the dismay of those lacking in skills.

International aid

Article Abstract:

Global poverty levels increase each year despite aid organizations' efforts to alleviate global poverty through their investment in international aid projects. The failure of aid programs to solve the poverty problem is often caused by the recipient nation's lack of commitment to the project and aid distribution becoming entangled in these nations' politics. Domestic agencies should possess genuine commitment and the adequate resources to successfully carry out an aid project, leading to sustainable aid activities and consequential upliftment of global poverty levels.
