Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence methods for environmental characterization of soils

Article Abstract:

Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) techniques are simple and fast methods that can greatly exceed analytical requirements for field screening and can generate quantitative elemental analyses for soils in environmental research. Its evaluation for certified materials suggest accuracy that is usually better than plus or minus 10, with some elements having few or no appropriate reference materials to test accuracy. Large positive biases are noted between EDXRF and standard EPA methods, since EDXRF measures total amounts of the analyte while EPA methods measure only the components labile in nitric acid.

Reduced pyrene bioavailability in microbially active soils

Article Abstract:

Microbially active soils have been found to be a significant factor in increasing pyrene mineralization rates. The study also reveals that bioavailability of pyrene and pyrene products were reduced significantly in microbially active soils than in untreated soils and soils treated with sodium azide (NaN3). Untreated soils and NaN3 treated soils yielded pyrene recovery rates of more than 75% after nine months while microbially active soils had lower pyrene recovery rates.

Detection of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide and sulfonium ion degradation products on environmental surfaces using static SIMS

Article Abstract:

A new instrument for detecting 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide and sulfonium ion degradation products on environmental surfaces is evaluated. The new device uses static secondary ion mass spectroscopy to alternately extract cations and anions in a manner which minimizes the effects of surface charging. It is suggested that the investigation of contaminated soils can be enhanced by SIMS analysis.
