Extra dimension

Article Abstract:

Product designing becomes easier, more efficient, and economically more viable with the use of a 3D CAD system. Mecmesin, a small manufacturer in UK, has successfully used the 3D CAD system to increase its productivity and annual turnover. The system gives a wide selection option by producing a wide range of similar designs of the product. Various designs could be compared and tested against each other in a 3D environment before making a final choice. The product could be made more cost effective by experimenting with the use of different materials and other inputs on the computer.

Communicating intent

Article Abstract:

Rapid prototyping and computer aided design (CAD) technologies provide industrial designers a means to effectively communicate their ideas to clients through three dimensional visualization. CAD does not make the design better but makes the design process easier and less prone to errors. However, there are still a number of issues that need to be addressed for the widespread application of these technologies, including the legal implications of data transfer between CAD systems.

Response ability

Article Abstract:

More and more companies are using finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis software to improve engineering design. FEA reduces costs by allowing engineers to determine the effects of conditions such as stress, heat and vibration on designs. On the other hand, CFD can simulate fluid flow and heat transfer in materials such as gases and liquid metals. Applications of FEA and CFD systems are described.
