First nematode-resistance gene found

Article Abstract:

Plant breeder Christian Jung and his colleagues have cloned a gene that makes sugar beet plants resistant to nematodes. This is the first gene identified that makes a plant resistant to an animal pest. The finding could reduce reliance on toxic chemical pesticides or crop rotation to control pests.

Teeth and bones tell their stories at Chicago meeting

Article Abstract:

One of highlights of the recent annual meeting was the revelation that sharks and rays may have been among the animals rendered extinct by an asteroid collision 65 million years ago. Other topics discussed included the amphibian-like microsaurs and Troodon eggs found in 1979.
