Flights of the future

Article Abstract:

British Aerospace's engineering director Dave Gardner believes that the 21st century's most important engineering trend will be the availability of information, particularly in the battlefield where control, communications and intelligence will be the key to success. In the civilian aerospace sector, Gardner predicts that airlines will be service providers, with aircraft operated by specialist companies and selling seats to different airlines. Materials, computers and manufacturing technologies will be the key to changing aircraft design, forecasts Gardner.

Palm-sized high power laser gets into the job

Article Abstract:

Cutting Edge Optronics, part of McDonnell Douglas, has developed a new high output solid state YAG laser which can be held in the palm of the hand. The central YAG crystal is pumped by arrays of very small laser diodes on each side. The unit has output of 150W, and can be used instead of large flash lamp pumped devices. It ensure that no external light paths or robotically traversed focusing optics are required.
