Fresh start

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine how to reduce the cost and complexity of the switched-reluctance motors. The study utilized 33 experimental prototype motor drives with power outputs ranging from 50W up to 1kW. These motor drives had operating speeds ranging from 750 to 30,000rpm. In the experiment, 50 different arrangements of power converters had been identified and classified to meet different requirements in the cost reduction objective. The results of the study showed that a number of real advances in the design of the power electronics circuits and the motors can be done.

Blowing hot and cold

Article Abstract:

Car manufacturers are having to invest in increasingly sophisticated test facilities to ensure their new models meet exacting standards. Ford has been involved in climatic testing for over 30 years and has invested 80 million pounds sterling in new test facilities at its Dunton Engineering Centre, England. The facility integrates environmental testing with a full range of other diagnostic tools.
