From Army of Hackers, an Upstart Operating System

Article Abstract:

The open source operating system Linux is poised to offer some serious competition to Microsoft Corp.'s dominance on the personal computer operating system market. The system is already in use with servers on large and local area networks. Linux is offered free to users and the code that comprises the software can be altered by users. There are many companies producing software that is compatible with Linux.

From the Bioweapons Trenches, New Tools for Battling Microbes

Article Abstract:

The highlight of the recent meeting of the Biotechnology Industry Organization was the introduction of a new DNA sequencing device by 2 scientists from Harvard University. The early results of the prototype machine are impressive. Also, research on a powerful emulsion that may be able to destroy anthrax and other gram-positive bacteria, gram-negative bacteria and viruses was discussed.

Engineering Metabolism For Commercial Gains

Article Abstract:

Researchers are using genetic engineering technology to transform bacteria into chemical reactors that produce bulk chemicals more cheaply by combining several chemical steps into one. Chemical companies will use the process to turn sugars and other raw materials into pharmaceuticals and industrial chemicals.
