Gathering Glycine Receptors at Synapses

Article Abstract:

J.R. Sanes and H. Betz examined the role of gephyrin in the formation of inhibitory synapses in the brain and spinal cord, and found that the protein is necessary for the neural synapses to be formed. Without the protein, neurological problems result, such as those found with molybdenum cofactor deficiencies.

Possible exceptions to rules for Alpha-helix termination by glycine

Article Abstract:

Possible exceptions are described to rules determining whether a propagating Alpha-helix will terminate or propagate through glycine upon reaching it. If these exceptions cannot be explained, it may not be possible to determine protein folding by primary amino acid sequence information.

Which came first, protein sequence or structure?

Article Abstract:

Researchers propose that the number of protein sequences that appear in nature is much smaller that the number of statistically possible sequences because the protein structures found in nature can be easily coded and they tend to be stable against mutation in the sequence.
