Article Abstract:

Microsoft's entry into the field of computer-aided-design (CAD) has motivated CAD vendors to enable their software to be accessible in all kinds of operating systems. Software companies are writing CAD software that are based on the native format of Windows. This enables them to compete with each other based on how their software can be integrated into larger information technology environments.

The collaboration behind the virtual roll-out of the Boeing 787 'Dreamliner' is investigated. Boeing has used three-dimensional (3D) modelling for planning and layout of production lines and the software systems involved are part of the product lifecycle management (PLM) portfolio from French company Dassault Systemes (DS).
