Grain size modeling and optimization of rotary forged Alloy 718

Article Abstract:

The simulation process and methodology for developing two models for computing recrystallized grain size in Alloy 718 billet are shown. Controlled high temperature compression testing was employed to apply alternate deformation and dwell cycles to Alloy 718 specimens. Grain size derived by simulation was found to be very much in agreement with grain size from forged billet when cooling rate was included. Findings also indicated that strain per pass and forging temperature were the predominant factors in regulating the recrystallized grain size.

Automatic simulation of a sequence of hot-former forging processes by a rigid-thermoviscoplastic finite element method

Article Abstract:

An automatic forging simulation method for analyzing hot-former forging processes is presented. The technique employs a rigid-thermoviscoplastic finite element method. It was tested by applying it to a sequence of three-stage hot former forging process and comparing the nonisothermal and isothermal results. The findings suggest that the method is useful for designing complex hot former forging processes.

A cobalt diffusion based model for predicting crater wear of carbide tools in machining titanium alloys

Article Abstract:

Crater wear is the predominant wear mechanism influencing tool life and productivity in machining titanium alloys with cemented carbide cutting tools. Comparison of predicted crater wear rate with experimental results from published literature and from high speed turning with WC/Co inserts show good agreement for different cutting speeds and feed rate.
