Ground-water treatments gain ground

Article Abstract:

Several cost-effective methods have been developed for treating contaminated groundwater. Air stripping removes volatile organic compounds (VOCs) through the action of air blown into stripping towers. Air sparging combined with soil vapor extraction involves the introduction of air into contaminated aquifers to remove VOCs through sparged air bubbles. In the carbon-adsorption method, pollutants are adsorbed as groundwater is filtered through carbon beds, while biological water treatment techniques convert contaminants into less harmful substances through the action of microorganisms.

Interstate water agreement calls for pipeline under Ohio River

Article Abstract:

Water officials for Boone County and Florence, KY, have forged a $50-million, 25-year interstate water deal with the city of Cincinnati, OH, to purchase up to 30 mgd or 113,500 square meter/d of Cincinnati's surplus treated water. The Boone-Florence water Commission will initially buy roughly 10 mgd or 37,850 square meter/d from Cincinnati, but the amount is expected to increase to 30 mgd between 1999 and 2024. Kentucky residents will save up almost $70 million over a 20-year period by buying the water instead of treating their own.
