Gyro cheques

Article Abstract:

Ken Wallis designs, builds and flies autogyro aircraft. His planes have been used in searching for people and hunting the Loch Ness monster. They have participated in military manoeuvres and in spy films, the most popular of which is the James Bond film, 'You Only Live Twice.' Wallis built his first purely experimental autogyro in 1959 and has since built more with improved efficiency and capability. Autogyros have low-speed capabilities, can travel close to the ground and can fly in areas that helicopters can not reach. However, they have not become commercially available.

Field of dreams

Article Abstract:

Innovations in modern stadium design are based on safety and multi-functionality. Engineering is important and the Gelredome stadium in Arnhem, Holland, features a movable pitch based on a sliding system. The pitch of the Kohlerdome, if it is built, will be divided into trays placed on a frame on top of a concrete floor, incorporating drainage and heating systems. The Lobb-designed Dockland's Stadium in Melbourne, Australia, featuring a sliding roof, will also be used as a 52,000 seat studio.

Everything with chips

Article Abstract:

Scientists at Sandia National Laboratories have developed smart micromachines which may be used in air-bags, drug-delivery systems and nuclear weapons. These tiny machines are fabricated in the same way as integrated circuits. Miniscule trenches in silicon chips are used to manufacture these machines. These are then hardened by soaking them in a solution of silicon dioxide. These machines can perform work by turning gears at hundreds of thousands of rpm.
