House panel targets centers, Cassini

Article Abstract:

A House appropriations subcommittee proposed a space-science budget that would drop the Cassini Saturn space probe and close the Goddard Space Flight Center and other NASA research centers. The Earth Observing Systems and the international space stations were left untouched. Budget details are given.

Goldin hopes to trim centers to stave off program cuts

Article Abstract:

An outside task force will present Goldin with guidelines to cut costs at NASA's 12 research centers. Recommendations include closing secondary centers, consolidating programs, contracting out center operations and moving specific program management from headquarters to the centers.

Goldin puts NASA on new trajectory

Dan Goldin has won political support for his success in remaking NASA to resemble a modern corporation. He has built a disciplined organization focused on modest missions and plans to improve the reputation of the agency's science.
