How number theory got the best of the Pentium chip

Article Abstract:

Repetitive computations of number theory were responsible for discovering the arithmetic flaw in Microsoft's Pentium processor, and make a good test for future computer hardware. Mathematician Thomas Nicely had been computing prime-number reciprocals by two different methods when he found the error.

Mathematicians open the black box of turbulance

Article Abstract:

The field of computational field dynamics emerged with researchers' efforts to understand turbulence and to predict the shock waves and flows that turbulence generates. Methods are described for predicting fluid flows for use in fields such as aerodynamics and weather prediction.

Prime formula weds number theory and quantum physics

Article Abstract:

Analytic number theorists and quantum physicists are researching the relationship between the Riemann zeta function and the behavior of complex atomic systems. Their work could discover the link between chaos theory and quantum mechanics.
