Using partioning alcohol tracers to estimate hydrophobicity of high molecular weight LNAPLs

Article Abstract:

The hydrophobicity of high molecular weight light, nonaqueous phase liquids was characterized by evaluating partioning alcohol tracers. With increasing n-alkane molecular size, alcohol partioning coefficients decreased hypothetically due to a decreased entropy of mixing. The article suggests that using the thermodynamic and empirical models simultaneously can better characterize a nonaqeuous phase liquid based on a single partioning tracer test.

Solvent extraction for seperating micellar-solubilized contaminants and anionic surfactants

Article Abstract:

The following study undertakes solvent extraction for removing micellar-solubilized contaminants having low equivalent alkyl carbon numbers (EACNs) from surfactant solutions. Research shows that extracting solvents must have more EACNs than the contaminant in order to lower the micellar solubilization of the solvents, which can lower the efficiency of the contaminant removal.
