Japanese corporations are conducting fundamental research in the fields of materials, electronics, computing and biology with the view of developing the commercial potential of new discoveries. Corporate laboratories are producing scientific results, but the economic results are not yet clear.

Has Tsukuba put its worst days behind it?

Article Abstract:

Tsukuba was constructed 40 miles from Tokyo in 1972 as a consolidated location for 47 government laboratories. Problems with the science city include isolation, transportation difficulties and communication difficulties.

Article Abstract:

A map of Japan showing the locations of research institutions and other scientific installations is presented. The sites of such scientific disasters as the mercury poisoning at Minamata are also pinpointed.
