Korean institute ponders role in global eradication efforts

Article Abstract:

The International Vaccine Institute (IVI) in South Korea was founded to organize the resources of developing countries to develop vaccines that meet their public health needs. South Korea promised to provide $50 million for IVI's facility and 30% of its operating costs.

Influx of industrial funding shifts balance on campus

Article Abstract:

South Korean companies are increasing their funding of university research and development in disciplines that can improve industrial competitiveness. Government funding is also shifting toward applied research. Some scientists fear the trend is weakening basic science.

Seoul unveils regional center

Article Abstract:

Nobel laureate Chen Ning Yang will be the center's first president. The center is a joint effort of ten Pacific nations, and hopes to become a major international research center. It will be located at the former Korea Advanced Institute for Science and Technology.
