Keep developing PCB, dioxin treatments, GAO report says

Article Abstract:

A report submitted by the General Accounting Office shows that alternative treatments to incineration for Superfund sites contaminated with dioxin and polychlorinated biphenyls have encountered several obstacles and have not been very effective. However, the report urges the EPA to continue the development of alternative technologies due to concerns voiced by community groups over incineration. The EPA has pinpointed several technologies that could be employed, but none are as effective as incineration.

Management limitations hurting DOE cleanups, panel told

Article Abstract:

Experts believe that inefficient management is the main factor preventing DOE's Environmental Management (EM) Program from attaining complete success. They told the National Research Council subcommittee, which is conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the EM program, to consider risk assessment as a solution to the management problem. It also adviced the panel that a complete reengineering of the system will help reduce cleanup costs.
