Learning limited: Companies are increasingly attracted by the idea of setting up their own higher education courses

Article Abstract:

Filtronic of the UK is an electronics group with plants in Ireland, Australia and the US, manufacturing equipment for cellular radio, defence electronics, microwave devices and cable television. Employees have the opportunity to undertake an MSc in electronics with tuition provided by Filtronic staff and tutors from the University of Leeds. The UK's Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals (CVCP) regards such developments as key challenges to traditional learning. Professor Eric Billett, vice-chancellor of Brunel University, feels that corporate universities could push the emphasis too far towards corporate requirements.

Don't be a dinosaur

Article Abstract:

A new report on company management, published by the Economist Intelligence Unit in partnership with employment consultant Korn Ferry International, suggests that the days of total management control are numbered and are being replaced by a new shared system of management, driven by the increasingly competitive marketplace. The report says that specific techniques, such as fast-tracking, succession planning and rotation, must be used to train the next generation of industry leaders.
