Life goes to extremes in the deep earth - and elsewhere: geomicrobiology

Article Abstract:

Recent discoveries show that bacteria can and do exist as deep as 2.75 kilometers beneath the earth's surface, at temperatures up to 76 degrees C. They are believed to have been transported there a hundred million years ago, and survive by dividing extremely slowly and doing basically nothing.
