Life in the fast track

Article Abstract:

The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA) was able to complete four turnpikes both under budget and ahead of schedule. Kilpatrick Turnpike in Oklahoma City, the Creek Turnpike in Tulsa, the Cherokee Turnpike between east Tulsa and the Arkansas border and the Chickasaw Turnpike between Sulphur and Ada. The OTA was able to accomplish this feat in spite of the project's being assigned to 22 different engineering firms and being allowed only 26 months for completion. A competent construction management team adroitly coordinated operations while the project was executed in phases to lessen construction costs.

Long time coming for long-span girders

Article Abstract:

Alfred Benesch and Co used 14 55-ton, 138-ft-long and 72-inch-bulb-T-beam long-span concrete girders in the I-294 Tri-State Tollway expansion project in Chicago, IL. The $500 million project of the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority will add another two lanes to the existing six lanes and a new collector-distributor roadway. The concrete girders form the superstructure of a continuous four-span bridge carrying I-294 over I-290. The girders saved 30% in cost over traditional beam designs.
