Managing technological discontinuities - a tentative framework

Article Abstract:

The manner in which established firms handle technological discontinuities is examined. Factors that influence this process at the technology, firm, industry and the local context levels are also identified. At the technology level, the nature of the discontinuity is an important factor while at the firm level, the important factors are organizational routines, the technology base of the organization and its perceptions of the future. At the industry level, speed of diffusion and diversity are important while at the local level, expertise levels determine response capacities of firms.

STRATAGEM - a methodology and computer-based tool for strategic regeneration

Article Abstract:

STRATAGEM is a new computer-aided methodology developed under the auspices of the UK Dept. of Trade and Industry. It is intended to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) implement a strategic regeneration program. The STRATAGEM process was developed through an investigation of the techniques, tools and practices adopted by leading manufacturing companies. This methodology stresses the value of staff involvement in the improvement process and the step-by-step retraining of SME managers in strategic planning, manufacturing analysis and strategy, and action planning.
