Marine Center is lightning rod in dispute over restoration

Article Abstract:

The SeaLife Center is at the forefront of a battle over how to spend the $900 million paid by Exxon expressly for 'restoration' of Prince William Sound. Alaska fisherman acknowledge the value of research, but want a larger proportion of the funds to buy land to prevent logging and development.

Scientific dispute at center of legal battle over salmon catch

Article Abstract:

A federal judge ordered the closure of the chinook salmon industry for the rest of the 1995 season after Native American tribes in the Pacific Northwest filed suit over the size of the Alaska catch limit. Alaska had used a new method of setting limits called abundance-based management.

Ionosphere research lab sparks fears in Alaska

Article Abstract:

Some local residents and activists oppose the construction of the High-Frequency Active Aural Research Program (HAARP) lab in Alaska. HAARP will study the ionized gases in Earth's upper atmosphere, but opponents claim it will change weather patterns and affect people's thoughts.
