Micellar solubility and micelle water partitioning of polychlorinated biphenyls in solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate

Article Abstract:

The enhanced solubility of hydrophobic compounds in aqueous solutions due to the addition of surfactant micelles was studied. Experiments were performed wherein 14 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were dissolved in pentane containing sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The PCB peaks were then quantified by integrating the peak surfaces and by multilevel calibration. Results indicate that the enhancement of the PCB's solubility is dependent on the SDS concentration and micellar volume.

Membrane-water partitioning of polychlorinated biphenyls in small unilamellar vesicles of four saturated phosphatidylcholines

Article Abstract:

A study has been conducted to assess the effect of the hydrophobic core in the membrane bilayer on the partitioning of 14 polychlorinated biphenyls in small unilamellar vesicles of four saturated phosphatidylcholines and water. Dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine had the highest membrane-water partition coefficient and diarachidoylphosphatidylcholine the lowest. These results suggest that compounds with the higher coefficient have greater membrane fluidity.

Biodegradation kinetics of highly chlorinated biphenyls by Alcaligenes sp. JB1 in an aerobic continuous culture system

Article Abstract:

The biodegradation rate constants of highly chlorinated biphenyls by Alcaligenes sp. JB1 in a aerobic continuous culture system were measured using a steady-state kinetic model. The results indicated pseudo-first-order kinetics for most of the PCB congeners. They also showed that losses caused by chemical and physical events have no effect on PCB metabolism.
