Mickey Mouse, Ph.D.: inserting a single gene makes mice smarter

Article Abstract:

Biologists have increased the intelligence of mice by inserting a gene that changes the physiology of the hippocampus. The inserted gene enhances the NMDA receptor, which apparently boosts long-term potentiation. The research is providing insights into the biology of learning and memory.

The neurobiology of fear

Article Abstract:

Research on rhesus monkeys provides insights into how the human brain responds to fear. Studies of three types of fear-related behaviors indicate that stress affects the function of the circuits that are sensitive to the neuroactive chemicals called opiates and benzodiazepines.
